Weber State University's Associated Actors and Technicians club each year hosts a project known as Runway in a Day. This event features a group of designers competing with garments modeled after a theme, constructed in less than 8 hours.
The theme for this years project was Mad Men. We were given a few hours before the beginning of the sewing process to sketch out our design. At the start of the following day we were given $10 dollars to use toward materials found at Savers and then 3 minutes to sort through the costume sale items from WSU.
Despite my ridiculous attire, The process was a fun learning experience that I believe left me with some additional skills for thinking quickly and being able to edit my work.
This image is of 3 of the models from the event. Though I lost to the dress on the right, all three of us presented great work showcasing our skills.
The director chose to push the time period back to 1870 and give the show a feeling of christmas with more muted colors at the beginning of the play, with color appearing in the ensemble as the play progressed. My role as the assistant designer was essentially to coordinate the ensemble as well as assemble their costumes with our relatively untrained staff and small budget.
Western Wyoming Community Colleges production of the Music Man was my first experience assistant designing a production. Though I was given the opportunity to design the entire production, I rejected the offer because of my newness in the costume design industry.
