Still Life with Iris

Still Life with Iris is a children's story about a girl that lives in a world much related to ours, the world that makes the things we know and take for granted such as leaves, wind, and memories. The protagonist Iris one day is stripped of her coat, the one piece that holds all of her memories and is sent to live with Gretta and Grotto Good, collectors of all things that are simply the best. Iris then embarks on a journey to remember who she is.

My design for the play Still Life with Iris was influence by the Japanese subculture of Mori. The style of this subculture is very eclectic and collected. Their wardrobe is sometimes childish with a whimsical and curious nature to it as well. I feel that this style suits the childish aspect of the play in the way that it lets the mind wander, and in a sense, leaves the characters dressed almost how children would dress themselves, in pieces that don't necessarily go together at first glance.

Another element that I wanted to bring into the play was that of knitted coats. When a character rips or snags their coat, they loose a part of their memory. Using knitted coats for these characters allows the actors to sit on the sides of the stage during the production working on their coats, building them and adding memories to them.
